Unlocking the Mystery of Mangoes: The Journey from Harvest to Your Plate - Why cant we get Green Mangoes?

Have you ever wondered why the mangoes you receive might not always be as green as you expected? It's a fascinating journey that begins far away in the tropical orchards of the Philippines and ends up on your plate in Australia. Let's take a closer look at the intricate process that determines the ripeness of these beloved fruits.

The Harvest

Our mango adventure typically starts with two days of intense harvesting, usually falling on a Wednesday and Thursday. It's a meticulous process where we handpick only the finest grade A mangoes, ensuring that each one meets our strict quality standards.

Quality Control and Treatment

Once harvested, the mangoes undergo a rigorous quality control process. We meticulously sort through them, selecting only the best of the best. But that's not all – to comply with the strict regulations set by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry (DAFF), our mangoes also undergo mandatory Vapour Heat Treatment. This crucial step ensures that any unwanted pests are eliminated before the mangoes make their journey Down Under.

The Journey

With quality control and treatment complete, our mangoes are ready for their journey to Australia. Packed with care, they embark on their airborne adventure on a Sunday, arriving in Australia the following Monday. Upon arrival, they undergo thorough quarantine inspections to ensure they meet Australia's strict biosecurity standards.

The Ripening Factor

Now, here's where things get interesting. The ripening process of mangoes is heavily influenced by the climate in Manila. With the extreme heat often experienced in Manila, some mangoes may already show signs of ripening by the time they are harvested. However, with the cooler climate in Sydney, the ripening process slows down significantly. This means that while some mangoes may arrive with a tinge of yellow, they will continue to ripen gradually, ensuring you still get to enjoy their sweet, juicy goodness.

Conclusion

So, the next time you bite into a mango and find it a bit less green than expected, remember the incredible journey it has undertaken to reach your plate. From the sun-kissed orchards of the Philippines to the strict quality control measures and quarantine inspections, each mango has a story to tell. And while its color may vary, one thing remains constant – the irresistible taste that makes mangoes a beloved treat all around the world.
