As the Managing Director of CarabaoMango.au, Sunday is usually reserved for family time and recharging. However, today was an exception that I couldn't pass up. I had the incredible opportunity to meet with Undersecretary Cheryl "Ching" Caballero at South Bank, Brisbane, where we enjoyed a productive working lunch.
Usec Ching, a native of Pangasinan—the largest producer of mangoes in the Philippines—is the perfect person to lead the charge in revitalizing this crucial sector. Her deep knowledge of mangoes and her commitment to improving productivity through sustainable and responsible farming practices are truly inspiring.
During our meeting, we delved into the many challenges facing the mango industry today. From issues with productivity to the broader concerns that plague the agricultural sector, we covered it all. What was most heartening was learning about the Department of Agriculture’s roadmap for the future, which paves the way for significant improvements in the industry.
One of the highlights of our conversation was the "One Country One Product" initiative by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, where the Philippines proudly showcases its mangoes. If you haven't seen the video yet, I highly recommend watching it here. It perfectly encapsulates the essence of what makes our mangoes world-renowned.
This meeting wasn't just about presenting the issues CarabaoMango.au has encountered—though those were certainly on the table. It was about exploring how we, as a company, can work hand-in-hand with the government to improve the state of the mango industry and all that it represents. This isn’t about asking for help, but about forging a partnership where both the private sector and the government work together to bring back the glory days of the Philippine mango industry.
The energy and optimism that Usec Ching brought to the table have given us renewed hope. We’re excited to do our part, no matter how small, to be the spark that reignites the global recognition of our national fruit.
Together, with the support of the Department of Agriculture and other key stakeholders, we look forward to a brighter future for the Philippine mango industry—one that will once again showcase our mangoes to the world.
This meeting was a significant step in the right direction, and I am proud to say that things are indeed looking brighter for the future of Philippine mangoes. We at CarabaoMango.au are eager to help lead the charge.
